October 7, 2021: Queens College- "Diversity Matters" EDI Workshop"According to the National Association of College & Employers (NACE), career readiness competencies are a set of skills and attributes college students can develop to help launch successful professional careers. Employers want to know that students are career ready and can demonstrate these skills. With a focus on the importance of diversity, in the workplace, there has been a recent update to the career readiness competencies which includes the Equity & Inclusion competency. Despite the renewed energy around EDI, there remains a noticeable lack of clarity around each of these terms. So, what exactly is diversity? What do equity and inclusion actually mean? And what is the difference between each term? Diversity is the presence of differences within a given setting. Equity is the process of ensuring that processes and programs are impartial, fair and provide equal possible outcomes for every individual. Inclusion is the practice of ensuring that people feel a sense of belonging in the workplace. Using the 3’Cs of career planning; Confidence, Connection, and Conversation, this competency will be of value to you in your professional and personal life.
